5/7/2025  An attempt to build new housing in Jamaica Plain runs into trouble with its neighbor: the Arnold Arboretum - Boston Globe
For 90 years, the brick monastery on the edge of the Arnold Arboretum was home to the Poor Clare Nuns of Boston. Rarely open to anyone outside the cloistered religious order, the three-story property and its surrounding gardens were designed for a life of contemplative prayer. Last May, the nuns moved to Westwood, and it’s been empty for almost a year.

Life is truly full circle—look to the many retired couples returning to Boston after years in the suburbs. Moving from a spacious, multi-room house to a condo is always an adjustment, but with the right expert, it is nonetheless a breeze. One couple called upon Catherine Truman Architecture & Interiors (truman-architects.com) to bring a piece of their three-story Georgian property in the Boston suburbs to a smaller, single-floor condo in Heritage on the Green.

When designer Leslie Fine (lesliefineinteriors.com) first saw the condo on an upper floor of downtown luxury residential high-rise The Millennium Residences at Winthrop Center, it was little more than a big white box. Although uninspiring on the inside with minimal lighting and detail, the many windows throughout gave way to eye-popping views of the Charles River and Boston Harbor. Her challenge was to reimagine the space and infuse it with a character and style that wouldn’t interfere with the scenery.

3/28/2025  How to Live Inside a Mall for 4 Years - Vulture
It is a crazy story. In 2003, a group of young, displaced artists in Providence, Rhode Island, decided to spend a whole week at the giant new mall that had taken over their neighborhood and wound up staying for years. The initial idea was both a lark and the kind of vaguely thought-through provocation one comes up with in the restless flush of youth: “Oh, we should live at the mall.” It came in response to a radio ad in which a mom (or, well, “a mom”) said she wished she could live at the Providence Place shopping center. So, these impulsive artists took it upon themselves to try it out.

It was frigid out, and so icy that all over town pedestrians were tumbling. But on the 35th floor of the Millennium Residences at Winthrop Center, life felt as easy as a summer afternoon, and Richard Baumert was marveling at the lap pool: 75 feet long, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, its water a bewitching shade of . . . let’s call it concierge blue.
